Jordan Jones revealed he’s loving linking up with his former Killie pal Greg Kiltie in the black and white stripes.
The attacking pair teamed up at Rugby Park under Steve Clarke, who led the Ayrshire club to the top six and European football during his successful spell at the club.
Now they’re combining to devastating effect with St Mirren, with Kiltie especially shining having taken up the creative mantle since playmaker Jamie McGrath joined Wigan Athletic last month.
Former Scotland under-19 star Kiltie has scored three goals in his last six appearances, picking up a number of pivotal assists as well since the start of 2022.
And despite not playing together that much during their time at Kilmarnock, Jones insists Kiltie’s quality has never been in doubt in his mind.
“I’m delighted to see Greg scoring goals,” Jones told Express Sport.
“I had been messaging him before I came to the club and I said to him I was looking forward to actually playing with him. At Kilmarnock we only played a handful of games together for one reason or another.
“In training we always linked up well and I could see how good a player Greg was.
“It’s good to see him to get over his injuries and he is match fit and looking confident right now and long may that continue.
“His second goal against Kelty was more difficult than it looked. It shows how confident he is to take it first time.
“I remember he was injured a lot at Kilmarnock and then in my first year, in the last game of the season he done his ankle.
“In my second season the team was doing so well that it was difficult for him to be match fit and get some game-time.
“I don’t think his talent has ever been in doubt though. I remember when I came to Scotland everyone at Kilmarnock was raving about him.
"But like most players you need to play to get confidence and score goals, now he is showing he’s back to his best.”
While 25-year-old Kiltie has been finding the net regularly in recent matches, Jones had to bide his time before making his mark on the scoresheet.
His first for the club was well worth the wait though, a sublime curling effort that showed the Saints’ faithful exactly what the former Rangers and Sunderland winger is capable of.
Jones said: “I need to work on my numbers for goals and assists, but to get my first St Mirren goal is a confidence booster.
“Will we have a goalscoring competition this season? I wouldn’t mind that at all.
“I need to start working on scoring scruffy goals though because every goal I have to work hard for.
“I was still delighted to see it going in and it gets me off the mark.
“The fans were singing my name and that’s great to hear.
“I feel there is a lot more to come from me and I’m delighted to be back playing football again.”
