Jordan Henderson opens up on Liverpool's return to training and when the Premier League should return

Jordan Henderson has hailed the measures Liverpool and the Premier League have put in place to allow players to return to training.

The Reds have returned to training in small groups at Melwood as part of phase one of the Premier League’s Project Restart.

With strict social distancing measures still in place, Liverpool's stars have only been allowed to train in groups of five for a period of 75 minutes.

And although some questions have been raised about Premier League players returning to training, Henderson believes the measures are "amazing" and have made players feel "safe" at the club's training base.

"We have had programmes to follow, so some of us are probably fitter than before we went into lockdown,” he told BBC Radio 5 Live on Tuesday night.

“The lads have looked really good physically and I never really had a doubt that that would be an issue.

"When you go back, it is a bit different with the type of training, getting used to the ball again, longer passing and shooting and the sharpness of twisting and turning, the change of direction, you need to get used to it.

"After a few weeks of full training, we will be right back where we left off, hopefully."

Before adding: "My opinion is that as soon as everyone is comfortable and as soon as it is safe to do so, we are guided by the experts and doctors on what they deem safe to do.

"For us at Liverpool, it has been really good. It has been great to get back and everyone has felt comfortable and safe, otherwise we would not have gone in. Hopefully that is the case throughout the Premier League."

Premier League clubs will decide on Wednesday whether to give the green light to return to phase two of training, which will involve full-contact training.

While all 20 clubs will then meet again on Thursday when they hope to set a return date as well as discuss fixture and TV issues.

Liverpool are currently a record 25 points clear at the top of the table and need only two more wins in their remaining nine games to win their first title since 1990.
