Jordan Henderson makes Liverpool title race admission but believes Reds 'deserve something'

Jordan Henderson admits Liverpool are praying for a miracle to ensure the Premier League title the skipper believes his side would deserve.

Victory at home to Wolverhampton Wanderers in their final domestic game on Sunday would move Jurgen Klopp's team on to 97 points – a total previously reached by only one club in top-flight history.

However, the Reds would still need Manchester City to drop points, either at home to Leicester City on Monday night or at Brighton and Hove Albion on the last day, to lift their first title since 1990.

Liverpool facing transfer decision over Divock Origi - and Barcelona could determine future

And Henderson is realistic when considering such a huge points haul may not enough to maintain the top spot they assumed once more with a dramatic 3-2 win at Newcastle United on Saturday.

“I suppose it’s good for the neutral!” said the Reds captain. “To be fair to us, it’s been a great challenge.

“City are a great team but so are we. We’ve competed right to the very end. Whoever gets it will deserve it. From our point of view, we couldn’t have done any more.

“It’s going to the last game and we need to finish on a high at Anfield and then pray that something, a miracle, can happen.

“We have given everything all season. We deserve something at the end of it, we’ve just got to keep going, keep fighting right to the last minute and see what happens.”

Henderson has revealed Liverpool's players, who will be preparing for Tuesday's Champions League semi-final second leg against Barcelona, will watch City in action against a Leicester side helmed by former Reds boss Brendan Rodgers.

“I’m sure we’ll watch it,” he said. “The lads will watch the game and yeah, like I say, pray for a miracle.

Mohamed Salah's agent sends out Liverpool title race message as Man City face Leicester City showdown

“Will I send Brendan a text? No! Well, maybe. I’ll think about it.

“I’m sure Leicester, who are a great team, will go and give everything, like you saw from Newcastle. I’m sure Brighton will, I’m sure Wolves will.

“That’s football, every one wants to win, no matter what stage of the season you’re at. Everyone wants to cause an upset, so hopefully there are another couple of twists and turns to come.”

The Reds earned their eighth successive Premier League win at Newcastle thanks to an 86th-minute goal from substitute Divock Origi.

And Henderson said: “That was a big moment for us because we wanted to come here and win and take it to the last game which we’ve now managed to do.

“We have kept this race going right to the last game. And you never know what can happen in football.

Liverpool defender Andy Robertson reveals why Brendan Rodgers owes him Man City favour in title race

“We just focus on winning games and we’ll just see what happens. What we’ve always said is that we’ll keep going right to the end, no matter what happens and we’ve done that again.”

Liverpool must overturn a three-goal first-leg deficit for the first time in their history if they are to reach the Champions League final when Barcelona, who won 3-0 in Spain last week, visit Anfield on Tuesday.

But Henderson believes the Reds can take heart from their performance in Camp Nou.

“We’re not stupid, we know it’s a massive task and I’m sure everybody expects that Barcelona will advance,” he said.

“Obviously we weren’t happy with the result in the end but we still got belief from the performance we put in over there.

“For us, it’s about performing again at Anfield and giving everything again in the game and trying to win.

Rafa Benitez reveals the Liverpool title message he keeps on his phone

“We can have no regrets. There are still at least two games to go and we need to focus on them.

“I couldn’t have asked any more of the lads. Everyone has been fantastic. It’s one more game to come in the Premier League and hopefully not just one more in the Champions League.

“It will be difficult on Tuesday, we just have to perform like we can, finish on a high and you never know what will happen.”
