Match of the Day pundit Jermaine Jenas has opened up on the invaluable role Jordan Henderson continues to provide for Liverpool.
The Reds followed up an important 2-1 win over Tottenham last week with a 7-0 thumping of Crystal Palace on Saturday afternoon, with Takumi Minamino, Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino (2), Jordan Henderson and Mohamed Salah (2) netting for the visitors.
Whilst Firmino and Salah gained rave reviews for their goals, Henderson was outstanding regardless of finding the back of the net and showed his importance to the team once again.
Salah scored a brace off the bench as he was rested, while Mane was substituted in the 57th minute for the Egyptian to take the field.
Jurgen Klopp will need to be clever with his selections during a busy festive period but Jenas, speaking on Match of the Day last night, feels that Henderson is different to others players who get rested because of the important role he plays every week.
“I think there are a lot of players in this team that can be rested, as Salah was rested today, but I think the demands he [Henderson] puts on this team are important," Jenas told the BBC.
"He is their leader and today was another example of that with the way he drove the team from the midfield.
“He gets into positions that allow [Andy] Robertson and Trent Alexander-Arnold to get higher up the pitch and into the positions they usually would. If they keep the ball, great. But if they lose it, he is in a position to help out defensively.
“We sit here every week and give Andy Robertson the plaudits, Trent Alexander-Arnold the plaudits, but look at how high up they get and they create all the chances, but the reality is that Jordan Henderson is doing a lot of their work for them.
"He is very intelligent and he is covering for them.”
