Jordan Henderson injury update as Liverpool captain left out of England squad

Jordan Henderson continues his recovery from injury and is expected back in training after this weekend's Community Shield.

The Liverpool skipper has been out since he injured his knee during his side's 3-1 win at Brighton on July 8.

It was first thought that he may be facing a prolonged period on the sidelines but is now expected to be ready for the season opener.

Liverpool begin their season against newly promoted Leeds at Anfield but before that take on Arsenal in the season's curtain raiser.

And Henderson ramped up his rehabilitation during last week's training camp in the Austrian town of Saalfelden.

The 30-year-old was a standout for Liverpool last term and was a favourite for many to be named the Player of the Year.

He played a total of 40 games, scoring on four occasions.

Gareth Southgate has left Henderson out of his England squad for games with Iceland and Denmark to allow him optimum recovery time.

Trent Alexander-Arnold and Joe Gomez are the two Liverpool representatives for the Three Lions.

The former was left out of the Reds' trip to Austria as he nursed a minor issue that isn't expected to be a problem with the national side.

Without Henderson to pick from Southgate has given a call up to Leeds star Kalvin Phillips.

The deep-lying midfielder is joined by Mason Greenwood and Phil Foden as first timers in the squad.

Southgate has also selected Harry Winks, Declan Rice, Eric Dier, James Ward-Prowse and Mason Mount as midfield options.
