Jordan Henderson injury latest as England star taken to hospital after freak accident during celebrations

Thomas Tuchel has confirmed that Jordan Henderson was taken to hospital with a “serious” wrist injury sustained in freak fashion following England’s 3-2 win over Mexico.

Standard Sport understands that Henderson is staying in Mexico City with a member of England’s medical staff and not travelling back with the rest of the squad to their World Cup base in Kansas City after the Three Lions dramatically secured their spot in the quarter-finals, where Norway await.

Henderson slipped while climbing back over one of the advertising hoardings at the Estadio Azteca as England’s players celebrated with supporters at full-time and landed awkwardly on his right arm.

Medics were quickly beckoned over by team-mate Dan Burn and the Brentford midfielder received treatment before being given oxygen and carried away on a stretcher.

Henderson, who received a yellow card from the sidelines for interfering during second-half stoppage time, was an unused substitute as 10-man England held on to knock out co-hosts Mexico on a famous night.

“Mixed feelings because I am exhausted, of course, and emotional but also sad because Jordan got injured,” England boss Tuchel said after the game.

“He injured his wrist. He is at the moment at the hospital, so it is quite a serious injury.

“It just doesn’t fit to the evening that Jordan is now not with us. I don’t know the procedure what is going on. I just did the press, and the doc told me he’s in hospital.”

England, who overcame the demons of 1986 and Diego Maradona’s infamous ‘Hand of God’ goal, became the first team to beat Mexico at the Azteca in the World Cup after Jude Bellingham’s brace and a penalty from Harry Kane.

England had to play the majority of the second half with 10 men after Jarell Quansah was given a red card following a VAR review for a high tackle on Jesus Gallardo, with Raul Jimenez’s penalty after a foul by Kane on Brian Gutierrez setting up an incredibly nervy final 20 minutes.

“I’m just proud of the mentality and the attitude,” Tuchel said.

“Round of 32, round of 16 is the moment in tournaments where you find a way to win.

“We did it with pure mentality, with heart. We overcame every obstacle that was thrown at us.

“I am so proud of the mentality and the will of this team. It is a very, very special night for us.”
