Jordan Henderson explains Champions League exit and how Liverpool must respond

Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson has explained the reasons behind his side's exit in the Champions League at the hands of Atletico Madrid.

Gini Wijnaldum and Roberto Firmino gave Liverpool a 2-1 lead on aggregate in extra-time following a 1-0 first-leg defeat in Spain but everything soon fell apart for the Reds.

Marcos Llorente then bagged a quickfire brace to level the match on the night and put the Spanish side in front on aggregate, with Adrian's poor clearance leading to the midfielder's first.

This shocked Liverpool and although they pressured late on, Alvaro Morata provided the killer blow to ensure a 4-2 aggregate victory for Diego Simeone's men.

Henderson was interviewed by BT Sport after the game and he explained what went wrong for Liverpool and how the Premier League leaders must react to the setback.

"Obviously we are really disappointed but the performance overall was very good," Henderson told BT Sport.

"The intensity was good. We put everything into it. We are disappointed with the goals but we are pleased with the performance.

"You need to be fully focused at all times. Any lapses in concentration can cost you.

"We are really disappointed. We deserved to go through due to our performance. That's all you can really focus on. To concede the goals that we did, we have to take it on the chin.

"We created so many chances to score and couldn't find the third to kill the game off. The lads gave everything but unfortunately we couldn't get the result we wanted."

On moving forward, Henderson added: "It will not feel nice but we have to react in the right way. We have got the derby next which is a big game for us. That's where the focus has to go now."
