Jordan Henderson could follow in Steven Gerrard's footsteps to end goalscoring curse

Jordan Henderson became the England player with the fourth most caps without a goal after VAR dashed his dreams of a maiden strike for his country on Tuesday.

The midfielder has made 60 appearances but has yet to score his first goal for the Three Lions.

But the Liverpool captain could end his 60-cap wait by following in the footsteps of his predecessor at Anfield, Steven Gerrard.

Gerrard 's first England goal came during the Three Lions' 5-1 thrashing over Germany in a World Cup qualifier in 2001. His stunning volley from 25-yards out put England 2-1 up just before halftime. England's other goals that day were famously scored by his Liverpool teammates courtesy of an Emile Heskey strike and a Michael Owen hat-trick.

England face Germany for the first time in a major tournament since the 2010 World Cup as they clash in the last-16 of Euro 2020 and Henderson will be looking to emulate his former teammate by bagging his first England goal against the Germans.

The midfielder had a late goal ruled out by VAR for offside during England's group stage game against Czech Republic that saw them clinch top spot to set up their clash with their old rivals.

Henderson came under fire for being selfish when he took a penalty off Dominic Calvert-Lewin and missed during England's Euros warm up game against Romania, while the 31-year-old also missed a spot kick during a penalty shootout that saw the Three Lions knock Colombia out of the 2018 World Cup.

The only time England have beaten Germany in the European Championships was in 2000 when they won 1-0 thanks to an Alan Shearer header, with Gerrard coming on as a 60th minute substitute that day.

It also remains to be the only time England have beaten Germany at a major tournament other than the 1966 World Cup Final.

Henderson will hope Gerrard's debut goal is a good omen heading into Tuesday's clash and that the fortune passes from one Liverpool captain to another to end his England dry spell as extend the Three Lions' run in this summer's tournament.
