Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson has opened up on how he regrets wearing a t-shirt in support of Luis Suarez before his side’s clash with Wigan Athletic back in 2011.
Manchester United defender Patrice Evra clashed with the forward in a game at Anfield in October 2011, with Suarez then given an eight-game suspension after a two-month investigation by the FA following the incident.
Suarez received the ban and his fine of £40,000 the day prior to the fixture at Wigan's DW stadium, and in a show of support towards their team-mate, Liverpool's players wore t-shirts with 'Suarez 7' on them during their warm-up.
The move was widely condemned and Henderson has admitted his regret.
“You learn a lot from experiences. I was a young player at the time so it was something I'd never really experienced before,” he told Anton Ferdinand’s new BBC documentary 'Football, Racism and Me'.
“Looking back on it now, I am not sure the club or everybody dealt with it in the best way.
“From a player point of view, our mindset was on Luis and how to protect him, but really we didn't really think about Patrice.
“I think that's where we got it wrong from top to bottom. If people want to point me out then I'll take full responsibility as well as a player.
“People will say, 'That's a bit late', but I suppose it's better late than never.”
While earlier this year Evra revealed that Liverpool have apologised to him for wearing the t-shirts nine years after the incident took place.
"He [Carragher] said they made a big mistake that day and he apologised," he said.
"It really touched me and now I will respect Liverpool as a football club because, when this happened, I was really disappointed with the club.
"I received an email from the chairman of Liverpool apologising for what happened nine years ago. He said I was welcome to come to Liverpool if I need anything. It really touched me because it’s better late than never, but I was surprised that Liverpool supported that kind of attitude.”
