Jordan has been registering record new daily coronavirus infections since early February.
Director General of the King Hussein Cancer Center (KHCC) Dr. Asem Mansour said it was “inevitable” for the country to be hit by a second virus wave given the people’s noncompliance with health precautions.
On Monday, the kingdom registered 4,450 new COVID-19 cases, raising the tally to 368,278. It also recorded 16 new deaths, taking the toll to 4,570.
The capital, Amman, recorded the highest number of cases with 2,953 in the past 80 days. The rate of positive results increased by 13.44 percent on Monday after 33,846 PCR tests were carried out.
Meanwhile, the National Committee for Epidemics (NCE) stressed the importance of imposing a new total lockdown over the weekends and introducing a night curfew.
Sources told Asharq Al-Awsat that the curfew is expected to begin from 9 pm until 6 am, while the reopening of businesses will be halted.
The government is expected to announce new measures on Wednesday. Prime Minister Bisher al-Khasawneh stressed that the people’s health is a priority.
His remarks stirred debate with head of the Amman Chamber of Commerce Khalil Hajj Tawfiq warning against re-imposing previous restrictions.
He instead stressed the need to study different options to address the second wave.
