Jordan's Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi has stressed that protecting Iraq and its people is a priority to Amman.
During a press conference with German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas on Monday, Safadi highlighted the need for dialogue and defusing tensions in the region, saying any escalation will have serious consequences on the Middle East, Europe and the world.
He highlighted the cooperation with Germany in combating terrorism and overcoming regional crisis, adding that the war against ISIS was still not over because the group still posed a security and ideological threat.
He also voiced appreciation for Germany's support to the two-state solution to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.
For his part, Maas said Berlin has been maintaining coordination with Jordan, which he described as a key mediator for stability in the region.
He called for efforts to support stability and security in the Middle East, adding that Germany will continue to support Jordan as it continues to house a large number of refugees.
Maas also called on Iran to stop interfering in regional conflicts, especially in Iraq. He suggested that no international forces would withdraw from Iraq because that would leave it vulnerable to terrorists.
The Iraqi parliament had demanded the withdrawal of US troops from Iraq following Washington’s assassination of Iran's Quds Force commander Maj. Gen. Qassem Soleimani in a strike in Baghdad on January 3.
