The partnership between Jordan and the UN and its affiliated organizations in dealing with the refugee crisis is very important and guarantees the sustainability of international support to meet the demands of the displaced and assist host countries, Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi has said.

Safadi met on Sunday with the UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator, Mark Lowcock, and the two discussed the cooperation between Jordan and the UN in addressing the repercussions of the Syrian refugee crisis and the latest regional developments.

The Minister explained that the large number of refugees is increasing pressure on Jordan, stressing that there is a “global” responsibility to address this challenge.

The only solution to the refugee crisis is the voluntary return of the displaced to their homelands, said the Minister, noting that this can be achieved if the international community worked towards creating the circumstances for their return by reaching a political solution to the Syrian crisis and restoring the country's security and stability.

Safadi stated that refugee needs have changed since the beginning of the crisis, highlighting the importance of providing effective programs to empower host communities.

Lowcock praised Jordan's distinguished humanitarian role in shouldering the repercussions of the refugee influx.

The UN official commended Amman’s cooperation with the UN and its organizations, stressing the UN's support for the Kingdom's efforts in securing decent living conditions for refugees.
