Jonny Howson sets out his stall for Leeds United promotion bid

Former Leeds United star Jonny Howson says the season must be finished in order to make sure promotion and relegation is settled fairly.

Clubs returned to training this week ahead of next month's proposed resumption of the Championship, although Leeds know they will be promoted via points per game should the campaign not be completed.

Leeds-born Howson, who spent six years at Elland Road with 185 league appearances, now plays for relegation-threatened Middlesbrough and says he feels the season has to be finished.

"Speaking from a personal point of view I believe you’ve got to finish the season," he said to TeessideLive.

"There will be complications and some people will be upset, but whatever happens that’s going to be the case.

"We can’t do anything about what’s happened, but I believe to get an outcome you need to finish it otherwise it’s not fair with regards to relegation, promotion, play-offs, you need to complete the full season.

"How many times have we seen it when it’s come down to the last few games and someone comes from nowhere to get promoted or escapes relegation, so the only fair way out is to finish the season, however that happens.

"I’m just glad I don’t have to make the decision how to do that."

The 32-year-old, who is out of contract at Riverside Stadium this summer, also admitted Championship clubs will have to adapt quickly to playing without fans.

He said: "That will be strange.

"I clicked on the German football last weekend thinking, ‘It won’t be bad watching it, it’s just on TV so there won’t be much difference’.

"But even watching on TV it seemed strange. Obviously it has crossed my mind if we go back it will be behind closed doors. I guess it will be strange because it’s the reason why you get to the top, to play in front of crowds where there is an atmosphere.

"I believe that if we do carry on it will be behind closed doors, it’s just another situation we are going to have to deal with. We can’t do anything about it, but I’m sure it will be strange.

"For some teams it might help them and for others it might work against them, but it is the same for everyone, that’s how it is and we can’t do anything about that."
