Jonny Hayes praised after deferring entire salary for a year to join Aberdeen

Republic of Ireland midfielder Jonny Hayes has been praised for deferring an entire year's salary to join Aberdeen.

The midfielder recently left Celtic and rejoined his old club, despite interest from Championship clubs in England and also others in Scotland.

The Dons manager Derek McInnes has heaped praise on the 32-year-old for the gesture.

It comes after he said that Hayes made a "significant financial sacrifice” in a two-year deal with the club last month.

“Jonny is a magnificent signing and a huge shot in the arm for everyone, including myself, that we managed to get him here,” McInnes told Aberdeen’s Evening Express.

“I am grateful for the gesture he made to allow it to happen. That shouldn’t be underplayed as it couldn’t have been done without Jonny’s gesture.

“Jonny does not want to make a huge deal of that. He just wants to concentrate on the job in hand and has been training brilliantly. It is great to have Jonny back.”

It's reported that the Scottish club are facing £10 million in projected losses as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.
