Jonny Hayes may not be a fan of the Celtic kit as he appears to turn tailor

He’s as old school as they come; a winger who likes to get the ball down, run at defenders and whip in crosses.

After a inauspicious first couple of years to his Celtic career, Jonny Hayes has finally become something of a cult hero.

The Irishman joined the champions from Aberdeen in the summer of 2017 in a £1million transfer from Aberdeen.

He didn’t get much of a look-in under Brendan Rodgers but has proved a more-than-useful part of Neil Lennon’s squad.

Scoring against Rangers at Ibrox in a Celtic victory can do that for you.

His crunching tackle – a challenge not seen since Jozo Simunovic ferociously won the ball against Kenny Miller in 2017 – in the fine 1-1 draw in Rennes also helped his cause.

But there’s old school and then there’s late 1980s old school.

If you look closely at the pictures from Celtic’s thumping Betfred Cup win over Partick Thistle, you might notice Hayes has appeared to have turned tailor.

This season’s kit has not proven universally popular with fans. Some aren’t all that impressed with the unbroken hoops on the New Balance design.

It seems to have got Hayes hot under the collar, too. Literally.

Upon closer inspection Hayes appears to have cut off the green collar to make it look more like the centenary kit sported by the likes of Paul McStay, who and under the management of the late, great Billy McNeill claimed the league and cup double.
