Jonny Hayes agrees Aberdeen deal as former Celtic star set for Pittodrie return

Aberdeen have thrashed out a deal to take Jonny Hayes back to Pittodrie.

The Irishman will sign a two year contract, subject to a medical, this week, reports The Daily Record.

The winger has made a number of financial sacrifices to make the deal happen and to help the cash-strapped Dons to get the move over the line.

Hayes made it clear after his release from champions Celtic last month that his preferred destination was a return to Aberdeen.

The 32-year-old had five successful years with the Dons, where he lifted the League Cup, before Brendan Rodgers took him to the Hoops.

Manager Derek McInnes was keen to get Hayes on board as soon as possible, despite the current financial constraints.

Dave Cormack is currently working on a survival plan to help the club plug the projected £10 million hole they will have in their accounts, due to the COVID-19 lockdown and football restarting behind closed doors.

The chairman has claimed that a number of recent cut-backs and investments have managed to half that shortfall.

Cormack and his fellow investors have brought over £2 million into the club, while furlough money and deferrals along with season ticket sales have all helped to half the potential deficit.

The players and a number of key employees have already agreed to take deferrals, while most other non-playing staff have been furloughed.

Cormack had a virtual meeting with his players and staff last week. He has asked the players to help further by forgoing their appearance and bonus money until football is back in front of crowds, while other staff have also been asked to take cuts in the short-term.

Talks are on-going on both fronts.

Cormack, on Twitter, stated: “All at AFC (are) working 120 percent to manage (this) crisis. “With no fans at games we now estimate an income hit of £10 million. “Incredibly, we’ve managed to raise/save £5 million so far. “Football success and protecting jobs (are) a priority. “Fans have been great, we can only get through this together. “Let’s do it!”
