Jonny Evans admits Northern Ireland players are in the dark about Michael O'Neill future

Jonny Evans admits he is in the dark over how long Michael O'Neill will remain in charge of Northern Ireland.

O'Neill was named as Stoke City's new manager last week on a three-and-a-half-year deal, but will job share with the international team for their remaining two Euro 2020 qualifiers against Holland and Germany.

It was also confirmed that O'Neill will guide Northern Ireland into any potential playoff next March, and possibly into the Euro finals if they make it.

Leicester City star Evans says he "doesn't fully understand" how the dual role will work.

Speaking ahead of Saturday's game against Holland at Windsor Park, Evans said: “It’s not really a changing of the guard because he is still there.

"I don’t fully understand how it’s going to work. If we get a play off or not, will he be in charge? It’s been said out there he will be in charge of those games.

"If we qualify for the Euros, will he be in charge?”

Despite confusion over the immediate future, Evans believes the continuity will afford the Irish FA time to find a suitable replacement.

“I’m sure they'll pick the right man for the job," he said.

“They made an unbelievable appointment in Michael and he’s spoken before about how they gave him time and backed him during a time of transition and difficulty at the start of his managerial career with Northern Ireland.”
