Jonny Bairstow cried when England won the T20 World Cup after missing out through injury

Jonny Bairstow has revealed he cried when watching his England teammates win the T20 World Cup, admitting the emotion got to him.

Bairstow was originally set to open the batting at the World Cup alongside captain Jos Buttler, but suffered a freak injury while playing golf the day the squad was announced. The 33-year-old broke his leg in three places and dislocated his ankle after slipping while walking off the side of the green.

"I tried to regain my balance, my left ankle turned right, dislocated and my weight went through my left lower leg," he told the Telegraph last month. "I heard it snap straight away."

He was ultimately replaced in the squad by Alex Hales, who finished the tournament as England's second leading run scorer with 212 runs at an average of 42.40 and a strike rate of 147.22.

Bairstow made an appearance on the BBC podcast 'Tailenders' to discuss England's victory and when asked how he felt watching the final, he replied: "I was absolutely fine.

"And then the closer you get to the lads winning, the emotion just starts to come in. Yeah, I had a cry, I'm not going to be shy to say that, absolutely.

"Because the emotion of everything, being told that you're going to open the batting in [the World Cup], to then breaking my leg, to then watching the lads go out there and not winning it last year, but then the guys win it this year.

"So there's that whole emotion of the things that I'm going through here, from my leg and everything like that, coupled with the pure elation that you've got for all the boys. For Woakesy that's not played most of the because of his injury and what he's been through.

"To Woody that we've played together and against each other since we were 11-years-old. You could go through the whole team and [I could] give you a list of reasons why."
