Jonnie Irwin updates fans on home refurb for wife and children after cancer diagnosis

A Place in the Sun star Jonnie Irwin has shared an update on his project to refurbish his family home amid his cancer battle. The TV presenter, who revealed last year that his cancer is terminal, has spoken about wanting to have a house in Newcastle-Upon-Tyne so his wife Jessica and their three kids can be near her family.

The 49-year-old was diagnosed with lung cancer in 2020 and went public with his heartbreaking news after learning it had spread to his brain. He has since opened up about his cancer and using the time he has left to make sure his family are "looked after" for the future, reported Leicestershire Live.

In his latest Instagram post, Jonnie shared a selfie taken in Newcastle with River Tyne behind him, writing: "Went to look at some windows for the refurb. Look at the view some lucky bugger has from their office window…"

Many of his 150,000 followers commented on the post with messages of support. Clare Cadman wrote: “Please Some guy with contacts get this lovely chap all the things he and his family need to complete their home.”

Linda Walton agreed: "Surely there's contacts out there that can sort this genuine lovely guy out with everything to finish family home so he can relax and enjoy family time." Diane Smith commented: "Jonnie your down to earth-ness is what makes you the amazing presenter that you are. You make it look so easy, but it’s not."

She added: "And although you are lucky and blessed to have found your beautiful wife and family, they are lucky to have a diamond like you...keep smiling, sending lots of love to you and your family".

Izabela Olearczyk posted: “Jonnie I just wish I could give you a hug! Strongest hug that I could give to anyone… " Karen Stove wrote: "Go on Jonnie you are an amazing inspirational human... family man and true gentleman". Sue Edmonds added: "Good to see you Jonnie... that cheeky smile, long may it continue. Stay strong matey & love to the whole family."

Speaking about his cancer, Jonnie has previously said: “I want to go knowing that Jess and the boys are looked after. I'm a family man and I need to put a roof over our heads and food on the table but work is something that’s really important to me.

"It also stops me thinking about cancer. I’m doing everything I can to hold that day off for as long as possible. I owe that to Jess and our boys. Some people in my position have bucket lists, but I just want us to do as much as we can as a family."
