Jonnie Irwin returns to work on A Place In The Sun amid terminal lung cancer battle

Jonnie Irwin has made his return to work as he takes part in an event for A Place in The Sun amid his terminal cancer battle.

Jonnie, 49, went public with his prognosis in November 2022 after being told by doctors he had just months to live. The dad-of-three had been given just six months left to live in 2020 after his lung cancer spread to his brain, but he decided not to tell anyone about it and continue on as normal.

The property expert shared snippets of the event on social media, as he sat alongside former co-star Jasmine Harman on stage at the property exhibition. Over the weekend, he shared a photo on social media of clothes laid out on his bed, including a wool hat, socks, scarf, and coat.

He wrote: "Selecting wardrobe for @aplaceinthesunofficial LIVE Tomorrow in Manchester. It’s an early start and as I’m not fit enough to run for the train atm I’m prepping the night before. My wife can’t quite believe it!

"Cold weather calls for wool, wool, and more wool. It’s also are rare thing for @jasmineharman and myself to both be there on a Sunday so please coming along and we’ll hopefully see you there. @mcr_central"

Jasmine later shared a video from the event which included a photograph of her and Irwin standing in front of the venue. She wrote in the caption: “What a pleasure to see my pal Jonnie, who inspired everyone with his advice: ‘Why wait?’ whilst we were on stage talking about seizing the moment.”

The 47-year-old was one of the first colleagues to send her pal well-wishes when the presenter shared his heartbreaking news. Sharing a message of support, she wrote on Instagram: "Sending lots of love and support to my great friend and original partner in crime @jonnieirwintv.

"I know it has taken bravery to share your story. As ever a true inspiration & always positive and up for a laugh no matter what the circumstances. Love to you and your beautiful family [heart emoji] #inspirational #friends #brave #positivity."

Scots co-star Danni Menzies also spoke out about the 'heartbreaking' news of her co-star's illness as she prepared to meet fans at The Ideal Home show. She said: “Yeah, Jonnie is… It's incredibly heartbreaking.

“But Jonnie's such a legend, the way that he's been super strong,” she continued. “And you know, he's still managing to get out and work. Yeah, he's an absolute inspiration, Jonnie. And I love him a lot.”

This comes after Jonnie announced in February he had started Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy. This involves breathing pure oxygen in a pressurised environment.

It's believed that flooding the body with concentrated oxygen can make cancer cells easier to kill with treatments like chemotherapy and radiation while also activating the healing process in a patient's body. Jonnie shared an image of the zip-up portable chamber he was using after walking to the treatment centre in Newcastle and wrote: "And at the end of this walk…is this…hyperbaric oxygen therapy."

A Place in the Sun airs weekdays at 3pm on Channel 4 and All 4.
