Jonjo Shelvey is left out of the Nottingham Forest squad vs Brighton

Nottingham Forest midfielder Jonjo Shelvey has again been left out of the matchday squad vs Brighton and Hove Albion, after claims that the midfielder was told to 'stay at home' ahead of the weekend's clash vs Liverpool

Shelvey was not involved in the matchday squad at Anfield at the the weekend after it was claimed he was told to ‘stay at home’ by manager Steve Cooper. He has once again been left out of the squad vs Brighton.

The Telegraph reported on Monday that there was a confrontation between the two during a team meeting ahead of the match. It is claimed that Shelvey took exception to being named on the bench for the weekend’s clash at Anfield.

The former Newcastle United midfielder was an unused substitute for the home loss against Manchester United the week before, but has also been battling with a slight calf injury. The Athletic said Cooper was not 'blown away' with the player’s performances in training last week, leading to the decision to name him on the bench. They also said he would not be banished long term.

Shelvey joined Forest from Newcastle in the January transfer window and has been a regular in the starting XI since making the move. He started five league games in a row before being named on the bench in the 1-1 draw vs Wolves.

He was a second half substitute against Leeds United, before returning to the starting line-up vs Aston Villa. The midfielder will now have to convince Cooper to reinstate him in the squad and the starting XI ahead of the final six games of the season.

Forest will need all the help they can get in the battle against relegation, with the team sitting in 19th position in the league. The Reds are two points off safety, but have the chance to climb out of the bottom three when they take on Brighton and Hove Albion at the City Ground.

Forest are then back on their travels at the weekend as they take on Brentford at the Gtech Community Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
