Jonjo Shelvey tells Newcastle United chiefs he wants to sign a new contract at the club

Jonjo Shelvey has told Newcastle United chiefs he wants to sign a new deal at the club.

His current contract expires in 2021 but he wants to put and end to speculation of him leaving the club each window by finishing his Premier League career on Tyneside.

Speaking after Wednesday's penalty shootout defeat to Leicester in the Carabao Cup, Shelvey said: “Obviously, I want to sign a new contract.

“I've never once come out and said that I wanted to leave the club.

“I don't want to leave the club.

“I'm happy here, I'm settled here.

“Obviously, the only way I'm going to get a new deal is if I'm playing on the pitch and contributing to the team and showing the fans, obviously, what I can do.”
