Jonjo Shelvey reveals his Newcastle United target that would get the city rocking

Jonjo Shelvey hopes to have played in Europe with Newcastle United by the time he has 'finished' and knows that when the Magpies are doing well, the city is 'rocking'.

The playmaker, who recently signed a new three-year contract, spoke of his aim of pushing for the European spots earlier this season.

Shelvey previously played in the Europa League with Liverpool and Swansea, but you have to go back to 2012, when Newcastle reached the semi-finals of that same competition, for the last time the Magpies qualified.

With the season currently suspended because of the coronavirus outbreak, Newcastle sit in 13th place in the Premier League table and are also in the quarter-finals of the FA Cup. - and how Shelvey would love to see his side back playing in Europe one day

"By the time I'm finished, I'd like to have played in Europe with Newcastle," he told In the Box host Luke Rooney. "We had been doing so well this year. We were in the quarter-finals of the FA Cup and were meant to be playing Man City at home.

"Obviously, you don't know what's going to happen with that. Hopefully, we can get to the final of that and get into Europe that way and, if not, we'll give it a go next season in the league but ideally that would be my main target.

"Just to play in Europe because when you're doing well, this place is rocking. This city is unreal, so vibrant, and the people are so friendly. It's just a great place to live and obviously my kids are settled in school up here and my missus loves it up here.

"She's got her mates up here and the kids have got all their school mates and dancing mates and things like that so it's just a great place to live and you're happy so you don't want to unsettle things that don't need to be unsettled."
