Jonjo Shelvey offers injury update as in-form Newcastle United midfielder faces race to be fit

Newcastle United midfielder Jonjo Shelvey has offer and injury update and spoken of the frustration of watching the Burnley defeat from the sidelines.

The playmaker bagged three goals in three games and had a pivotal role in the Magpies' recent upturn in form.

The 27-year-old has established himself as Steve Bruce's first choice pairing in United's engine room alongside Isaac Hayden since the victory at West Ham United in November.

But following successive strikes against Manchester City, Sheffield United and Southampton, Shelvey was one of several players ruled out of the trip to Turf Moor on Saturday by injury.

Bruce was forced to make four changes to the starting eleven, and the visitors were edged out by a second-half Chris Wood header.

Shelvey picked up a minor calf strain on Thursday ahead of the trip, and his pleas to retain his place in the Magpies team fell on deaf ears with the club's medical staff.

Speaking to the club's website, Shelvey said:"It was probably key to miss one game rather than six or seven if I'd made it worse, but I should be back training by Thursday so it'll give me a chance to play on Saturday.

"I didn't want to miss the game on Saturday, I still asked if I could play but the medical team made the decision to miss the game. It's just horrible not being able to help the team. Before that game everything had been going so well, and I just wanted to keep that going.

"Hopefully the game I've missed, I can just put that aside and get back to winning ways and hopefully another goal on Saturday."
