Jonjo Shelvey makes Liverpool admission ahead of Newcastle United clash

Former Liverpool midfielder Jonjo Shelvey has opened up on his departure from Anfield in 2013.

It has been six years since Shelvey left the Reds for Swansea City, with the 27-year-old now a key part of the Newcastle United squad.

Shelvey impressed early in his career at Liverpool and even made his England debut in 2012.

But the playmaker decided to move on and try to take his game to another level. Looking back, however, the Newcastle star admits he probably left too soon.

"I probably shouldn't have left Liverpool," Shelvey told the Chronicle .

"I had the option to stay but I felt I had to go away as I was at that age where I wanted to play football matches.

"You'd get a game one week, big players would come back and you'd be out of the team next week. It was stop-start."

Whilst Shelvey's career hasn't quite taken off like he would have hoped after leaving Anfield and playing more games, he is still happy that a good stint in Wales allowed him to switch to the Magpies.

"I came away from Liverpool and kinda had regrets. But it is what it is," Shelvey added.

"I played a lot of football at Swansea and that helped me get a move to Newcastle."
