Odd timing or a sign of the times? In the same week that Celine unveiled its SS15 face as Joan Didion, on Thursday night Saint Laurent revealed its own similarly accomplished campaign star: 71-year-old Joni Mitchell. Part of the Saint Laurent Music Project and shot by creative director Hedi Slimane at Mitchell’s home in Bel Air, California, the singer appears in three images wearing Saint Laurent’s leather cape, country hat and folk tunic. Granted, it’s not the first time Saint Laurent has used an older non-model. Owing to the label’s longstanding relationship with music, previous models have included Marianne Faithfull, Kim Gordon and Courtney Love. Still, if you can think of a better person to showcase this spring’s pervasive 70s trend, we’d love to hear it.
