Jones, Hannibal, Cavani - How Manchester United lined up in friendly defeat to Stoke

Manchester United handed starts to academy trio Teden Mengi, Alvaro Fernandez and Hannibal Mejbri as they faced Stoke City in a behind-closed-doors friendly on Wednesday.

Championship side Stoke ran out 4-3 visitors in the clash with Mengi and Mason Greenwood on the score sheet for a much-changed United side at Old Trafford.

The club looked to give more minutes to players who were not called up to their national sides over the international break, while Phil Jones continued his rehabilitation after 18 months without a competitive appearance.

Summer signing Tom Heaton started the match in goal for United with Jones and Mengi chosen in the centre-back positions. Academy hopeful Fernandez, who joined from Real Madrid last year, played at left-back with Diogo Dalot selected on the right.

United looked to once again trial an expansive 4-3-3 approach in midfield with Nemanja Matic chosen as the anchor which saw Donny van de Beek and Hannibal playing ahead of him.

Up front Juan Mata and Greenwood took the wide roles while veteran forward Edinson Cavani took up the central attacking position after he was prevented from joining up with the Uruguay national team.

Manchester United starting XI v Stoke : Tom Heaton, Phil Jones, Teden Mengi, Diogo Dalot, Alvaro Fernandez, Nemanja Matic, Donny van de Beek, Edinson Cavani, Hannibal Mejbri, Juan Mata, Mason Greenwood.
