Deputy Chief Medical Officer volunteers at Nottinghamshire Covid vaccine centre

England's Deputy Chief Medical Officer Jonathan Van Tam volunteered his spare time to help patients getting the Covid-19 vaccine at a Nottinghamshire centre.

The professor was seen at Carlton's Richard Herrod Centre, which was one of the first to open as a hub in Nottinghamshire, as he helped give the vaccine out to residents from the area.

Nottingham's Professor Van Tam has been a key voice during government press conferences on Covid-19 and has been praised for his clear and concise messaging of the situation which often contain analogies to give context to viewers.

His career has so far encompassed pharmaceutical giants SmithKline Beecham (now GlaxoSmithKline), Roche and Sanofi-Pasteur, a stint as Head of the Pandemic Influenza Office at the UK Health Protection Agency (now Public Health England).

He has also lectured for a number of years at the University of Nottingham.

The Department for Health and Social Care told Nottinghamshire Live Professor Van Tam continues to help lead the national response to the pandemic and is supporting the vaccine rollout programme as a volunteer in his spare time.

A spokesperson confirmed Professor Van Tam volunteered at the Nottinghamshire centre on Sunday, January 10.
