Jonathan Stewart may have lost some of the burst he had when he was in the prime of his career with the Panthers. He still knows what he’s talking about when it comes to NFL running backs, though.
Speaking in an interview on WFNZ radio last week, Stewart gave some thoughts on his ranking of the top backs in the league right now. J-Stew put his teammate Saquon Barkley at No. 1, followed by his former teammate Christian McCaffrey at 1B, per Grant Gordon at NFL.com.
“The best running back in football right now is Saquon Barkley, I think. . . And I’d say a 1B to that is Christian McCaffrey.”
Stewart is a little bit biased since he played with both of them. That doesn’t mean he’s wrong though. As it happens, his ranking aligns very closely with our own analysis of the running back position heading into the 2019 offseason. We also had Barkley ranked No. 1 in the league, followed by Todd Gurley of the Rams at No. 2. McCaffrey came in third, followed closely by Alvin Kamara.
