Jonathan Ross opens up on Loose Women of guilt over not seeing his mum before her death

Jonathan Ross has emotionally opened up about losing his mother and the guilt of not seeing her before she died.

The ITV chat show host's beloved mother Martha died in January after a battle with cancer at the age of 79.

But Jonathan says that he 'put off' going to see his mum, who appeared in the BBC soap EastEnders as a market stall worker for many years, because he had not realised how seriously ill she was.

Speaking on Wednesday's Loose Women , the 58-year-old said: "My father is still alive so this was the first of my parents that we lost.

"I mean it is devastating. You know it's going to be a big loss but you don't really know how it is going to feel. I don't know if you ever fully get over it really."

Jonathan then added: "What's awful is that I did see her shortly before her death but then...

"Well, she had a form of cancer but we were told that it was liveable with. We assumed she would be around for a lot longer.

"Then in early February she got ill and a phone call went around. We had a family WhatsApp group.

"I feel bad because everyone said, 'Oh, we will all go and see her'. And I said, 'Let's not all go and see her today because then there is no one going to see her tomorrow. Let's spread it out during the week. Who can only go today?'

"Two of them went there, and then she died that day. That last day that I would have seen her. Although I think she didn't really know what was going on."

Martha died on January 30 with Jonathan announcing the news in a Twitter statement.

He described the late Mum, Grandma and Great-Grandma as "a wonderful, loving, glamorous, thoughtful, vivacious woman," who was "always smiling. Always happy. Always putting us first."

Continuing his tribute to his mum after panelist Denis Welch shared how fond she was of her fellow soap star, Jonathan jokingly said: "One thing my mum did, and I'm sure this will strike a chord with a lot of you, whenever anyone would say to her, 'You must be so proud of Jonathan' she'd go: 'I'm proud of all my children.'"

He then lovingly added: "She loved us all with no holding back at all, and all equally as well. We all miss her terribly."

As well as appearing in Eastenders, Martha Ross also had roles in Grange Hill, The Sean Hughes Show, Space Virgins and Barrymore.

She also wrote a weekly agony aunt column for Real People magazine.

Loose Women airs weekdays at 12:30pm on ITV.
