Jonathan Ross convinced Vera star Brenda Blethyn is on The Masked Singer

In one of the most out there guesses on the show so far, panellist Jonathan Ross was convinced that Vera star Brenda Blethyn stepped onto the stage in the first episode of the new series.

The has to be seen to be believed talent show returned on Saturday night after proving to be a surprise ratings success for ITV this year.

Host Joel Dommett once again took the reins as Jonathan fellow detectives Rita Ora, Mo Gilligan and Davina McCall had to work out the answer to the question 'who's that behind the mask?'

And speaking of detectives, talk show presenter Jonathan was sure that one of the first singers in action - Alien - was none other than DI Vera Stanhope herself aka BAFTA winning actress Brenda Blethyn.

He said the voice was a big giveaway as well as a clue in the VT package of a crime scene, which of course Brenda is no stranger to in her role as the no nonsense sleuth in the hit ITV drama.

Jonathan's guess wasn't met with an agreement from the panel or the socially distanced studio audience and he proved to be way off the mark as Alien, after being the first act voted out in series 2, revealed themselves to be singer Sophie Ellis-Bextor.

The crime scene clue was a firm nod to her hit single Murder on the Dancefloor, with other clues including 'trip the light fantastic' - the name of one of her albums and mention of 'the audience' - which was the name of the band she was in before she found fame as a solo artist.

There was also a clue about her 'winning an epic battle' which wasn't in reference to her much publicised fight for number 1 against Victoria Beckham in summer 2000, but the fact she once appeared in Game of Thrones.

Other acts in action on Saturday included Robin, who beat Alien in their head to head and had viewers convinced he was JLS star Aston Merrygold, while the judges guessed everyone from Dean Gaffney to Joe Wicks.
