Jonathan Rhys Meyers charged with drink-driving in California, America

Jonathan Rhys Meyers has been charged in Malibu, California with drink-driving following a collision, the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department has said.

According to Law enforcement officials, the 43-year-old actor was involved in a minor car accident on Sunday and nobody was hurt.

The Tudors star was taken into custody for a misdemeanor DUI.

The police would not release Meyers' blood alcohol level, PA reports.

He is due to appear in court next February.

A representative for Jonathan as well as the Los Angeles Police Department have been contacted by MirrorOnline for comment.

Jonathan has struggled with his alcohol consumption for some years and is reported to have headed to rehab at least six times in the last 15 years.

Despite trying to curb his alcohol abuse, the actor has reportedly relapsed several times.

Five years ago, the Bend It Like Beckham star apologised after pictures surfaced of him drinking straight vodka in public.

Back in September 2017, the star was also spotted looking 'completely out of it' before security guards ushered him away from Dublin Airport.

One year later, Rhys Meyers was detained by police as LAX after being caught up in a drunken argument with his wife Mara.

The actor is said to have launched into a furious tirade while on the flight from Miami to Los Angeles while his wife and one-year-old son was sat next to him.

He then allegedly tried to smoke an e-cigarette in the bathroom on the flight, which is prohbited.

THE TUDORS TX BBC Two - WEEK 40 Fri October 5th Picture Shows: Jonathan Rhys Meyers (Henry VIII) and Natalie Dormer as Anne Boleyn Passion, ambition, and treachery collide in this compelling drama about the early years of King Henry VIII's infamous 40-year reign. At the age of nineteen, young Henry VIII (Jonathan Rhys-Meyers) succeeds to the throne. Affairs of the state carry little interest for the young monarch, and official matters are left to the powerful Cardinal Thomas Wolsey (Sam Neill), while England's ruler tends to his own desires. For those in Henry VIII's inner circle, including Cardinal Wolsey, second wife Anne Boylen (Natalie Dormer), Catholic martyr Sir Thomas More (Jeremy Northam), and the Duke of Norfolk (Henry Czerny), staying in the favor of a self-serving King is an arduous and dubious task. LAX Airport cops detained the star but he was later released.

Following the ordeal, Jonathan apologised for his behaviour and explained that he had an allergy to alcohol.

Speaking to the  Mail on Sunday at the time, he explained: "I’ve let myself down by relapsing, and it’s my responsibility. Nobody else is to blame."

He added: "I don’t suffer from alcoholism – I suffer from an allergy to alcohol every time I drink it," he added.

"When I drink, the consequences are so devastating that it is a problem. But I never need a drink. It’s not something I crave."
