Jonathan Rea suffers massive crash in Portugal

Jonathan Rea suffered a massive crash during racing at Saturday's World Superbike Championship in Portugal.

The Co Antrim rider was leading race one from Scott Redding and series leader Toprak Razgatlioglu when he came off at the end of lap five.

Thankfully Rea was able to get to his feet after the high-speed incident before being taken to the course medical centre for follow-up checks.

It was later confirmed that the 34-year-old suffered multiple contusions and a left elbow abrasion. He will be assessed before Sunday's warm-up at Portimao.

Speaking afterwards, Rea said: "It’s quite painful in my left elbow and my left leg, but apart from that generally ok."

Rea also insists he is ready to "roll my sleeves up" after his brief duel with Razgatlioglu in Saturday's race.

There were some aggressive moves during the early laps in Portimao, with Rea saying: "I couldn’t do my rhythm because I kept getting divebombed on the apexes of corners. Frustrating couple of laps, and that ultimately led to the crash.

"I don’t want to complain too much [about Razgatlioglu], because I’m ready to fight like that, and I’m going to fight like that. I’m happy to let the brakes off and use him as a berm; that’s what he did to me at Turn 13.

"Of course there is a line, these are big bikes and you can’t just come from miles away to make a pass just because you feel brave enough that you can stop at the apex.

"I don’t want to cry about it, because I don’t want to be called a crybaby, but I’m ready to roll my sleeves up too."

Razgatlioglu went on to win race one ahead of Redding, increasing the Turkish rider's lead over Rea to 45 points with two rounds remaining after this weekend.

The Superpole race on Sunday is at 11am with race two at 2pm - both UK time.
