Jonathan Rea hopes dented following latest World Superbike twist

Jonathan Rea's World Superbike hopes suffered another dent after Saturday's opening race in Indonesia was postponed.

All racing was called off following heavy rain at the new Mandalika circuit.

There will now be two full distance WorldSBK races on Sunday but no Superpole race, meaning Rea can only win a maximum of 50 points instead of 62.

The Co Antrim rider trails Toprak Razgatlioglu by 30 points, meaning his title defence is now hanging by a thread.

Rea concedes that he now faces an "unrealistic challenge" of winning a seventh straight World Superbike title.

He said: “Having no race today makes it a difficult and unrealistic challenge but you also have to keep fighting until the end, because you never know what the weather is going to do.

"There could be the same kind of thing tomorrow. We just have to wake up and see how it is going to be. My mindset is to go out and do the best I can."

Rea admitted the 2021 season has been "mentally challenging", with the Northern Ireland rider's Kawasaki team hit with a reduced rev limit a week before the opening round.

He has been wedged in a battle with Razgatlioglu throughout the series, but now looks destined to relinquish his long-held crown to the young Turkish star.

"Even before this weekend it was difficult, but I was relishing that challenge when I saw some rain. I thought it was an opportunity because in heavy rain I am quite strong," Rea added.

"We have been playing catch up from FP1 this weekend but I feel like we have been getting there and the bike is quite strong with our tyre choice for the races.

"We will have to see tomorrow.”
