Jonathan Rea clinches sixth World Superbike championship

Jonathan Rea is World Superbike champion once again.

Rea clinched his sixth successive title in Portugal on Saturday after Scott Redding was forced to retire in the first race at Estoril.

"I have no feeling right now, to be honest. I can't even look back," Rea told Eurosport.

"It has been an incredible journey this season. I just want to thank the organisers and circuits for getting racing going this year.

"With everything people are going through this year, sport always comes second. But we managed to race.

"I really miss the fans here, and my family and friends. My travelling support from Northern Ireland would usually be here. It is all for them."

He added: "It has been a hell of a journey and I am so, so happy."

Coming into the weekend Redding was the only rider able to catch Rea in the standings.

Kawasaki star Rea just needed three points from any one of this weekend’s three races to seal the championship.

The Co Antrim rider started 15th on the grid after crashing in Superpole, with Redding last on the grid after crashing himself.

However, when Redding was forced to retire with technical difficulties the outcome was beyond doubt.

Rea finished fourth in the race which was won by Turkish rider Toprak Razgatlıoğlu.

The Ulsterman is the most successful rider ever in World Superbikes, and is one win away from 100 victories in the championship.
