Jonathan Liew named Sports Columnist of the Year

Jonathan Liew, chief sports writer of The Independent, has been named sports columnist of the year at the Sports Journalists’ Association awards.

Liew, 33, joined The Independent in 2017 from the Daily Telegraph and has become a key pillar of our sports coverage with his agenda-setting columns and features.

His ability to write on diverse issues, from intersex qualification in sport to Saudi Arabia and an imagined conversation between Alexis Sanchez’s dogs, set Liew apart.

Having just returned from the Caribbean where he was covering England’s cricket tour of the West Indies, Liew has spent the past year covering the Ashes, football’s World Cup in Russia and the Ryder Cup, as well as the daily grind of Premier League football, the Champions League and rugby league.

The Independent was also highly commended in the category of sports website of the year, and nominated in eight other categories.
