Jonathan Leko reflects on Kiko Casilla incident and Leeds United stance

Former Charlton Athletic loanee Jonathan Leko has revealed that he has not received any form of an apology from Leeds United or goalkeeper Kiko Casilla following the incident between the pair last September.

During Leeds' 1-0 reverse to the Addicks at The Valley at the end of September, striker Leko, who has since returned to West Bromwich Albion following his loan spell with the Londoners, was adjudged to have been racially abused by Whites shot-stopper Casilla during the first half.

After months of investigations, a decision was reached at the end of February by the Football Association, who charged Casilla with using “abusive or insulting words," which resulted in him being slapped with a £60,000 fine and an eight-game ban, with only two matches of that suspension having so far been served.

Now, almost eight months on from the incident, Leko, who spent just over four months on loan with Lee Bowyer's side before having to cut it short due to a season-ending ACL injury, has lifted the lid on what happened following the incident, as well as revealing that he is yet to receive an apology from Leeds or Casilla.

"I'm just glad it's over now," Leko told Sky Sports. "At the time, I was annoyed how long it took to get dealt with. That probably made me feel bad because nobody was listening to me or taking me seriously.

"Now I've changed my stance and would tell people to report any incident. I had a meeting with the PFA and they say if it happens again, they can speed up the process and get people to help.

"I've had lots of support - especially from Charlton. I've had nothing from the Leeds United side. It surprises me a little bit as I thought I would get some sort of an apology, but I guess they have to back their player.

"It's done now and I want to move on. I don't want to talk it over with him. No - I don't want to do that."

Though Leko will not be able to play in part in the remaining Championship fixtures once the season is, hopefully, granted the green light to be concluded, he will be watching on from great interest from the sidelines, with the Baggies, of course, locked in a battle with Leeds to win the Championship title.

"I want West Brom to get promoted and Charlton to stay up," Leko added.

"That's what I want personally. It would be so harsh on Charlton because they've only just got into the relegation battle so it would be tough on them.

"Slaven Bilic has been really supportive. He's been asking about my injury and how I'm doing. I'm now just fully focused on the future. Getting back fit and getting ready for next season."
