Jonathan Kuminga gives fair assessment of his preseason improvements

Jonathan Kuminga has enjoyed a stellar preseason. The Golden State Warriors forward has been one of the team’s standout players and has impressed on both sides of the court. Kuminga ended preseason averaging 21.8 points, shooting 45.8% from three and 54.7% from the field. The third-year forward also improved vastly as a rebounder, which Steve Kerr noted as a focus.

Speaking to the media after the Warriors’ October 20 loss to the San Antonio Spurs, Kuminga reflected on his preseason performances.  Kuminga noted how he’s proud of what he’s shown during Golden State’s five preseason games before focusing on his turnovers as a primary issue.

“So far, it was good,” Kuminga said. “I would say I’m proud of it, for sure…Gotta cut them turnovers down a little bit. I feel like today, I actually did better. I think that’s the biggest thing. I’m just working on it, watching film. I’m supposed to watch film with coach about those turnovers. I feel like so far that’s the only thing I gotta work on. As the season goes, as the games go, as I get more comfortable, things like that won’t happen.”

Kuminga projects to be an important rotation player in the upcoming season. Kerr recently spoke about giving the explosive forward a green light to crash the glass in search of offensive rebounds. While playing alongside Chris Paul is also expected to help Kuminga’s development.

Kuminga has steadily improved since entering the NBA and is clearly on track to eventually become a bona fide starter on the Warriors as their core continues to age.
