Jonathan Kuminga Contract Drama: Is the Inconsistent NBA Power Forward Worth $90M?

Golden State Warriors forward Jonathan Kuminga has sparked contract controversy after reportedly rejecting a two-year, $45 million offer from the team. As the 2025 NBA offseason heats up, the 22-year-old restricted free agent is said to be seeking a long-term deal worth up to $90 million, prompting debate over his performance, consistency and value to the franchise. The standoff has drawn attention from other NBA teams and raised questions about the Warriors' future strategy.

Kuminga Rejects Warriors' $45M Offer Amid Free Agency

Jonathan Kuminga declined a contract proposal from Golden State that would have paid him $45 million over two years, with the second year subject to a team option, per ESPN's Shams Charania. The offer also reportedly included the removal of a no-trade clause, which his camp opposed. Instead, Kuminga is believed to be pursuing a deal in the region of three years and $82 million, or more, with offers from rival teams reportedly approaching $90 million over four years.

The standoff comes at a critical time for the Warriors, who are seeking to maintain cap flexibility for future acquisitions. Despite Golden State's interest in retaining Kuminga, they have so far resisted committing to a long-term package.

Flashes of Talent Amid Ongoing Inconsistency

Kuminga's on-court performance has shown significant promise, but questions remain over his consistency. In the 2024–25 NBA season, he averaged 15.3 points and 4.6 rebounds per game. His career averages stand at 12.5 points and 4.0 rebounds across 258 regular season appearances.

The 6-foot-8 forward posted several standout performances, including a perfect 11-for-11 shooting night against Atlanta in January 2024 and two 34-point games in December. However, concerns have emerged over his shot selection, defensive reliability and decision-making, particularly in high-pressure situations. These inconsistencies have contributed to fluctuating playing time and a limited starting role under head coach Steve Kerr.

Kuminga's Confidence Clashes with Warriors' Caution

Despite the team's hesitation, Kuminga has publicly expressed confidence in his future, sharing on social media, 'I'll bet on myself all day'. His camp is reportedly focused on securing a larger role and greater contractual control, which Golden State has so far declined to offer.

The Warriors, meanwhile, are prioritising roster flexibility and potential star acquisitions, which makes them reluctant to lock Kuminga into a long-term, high-value agreement. Team executives are reportedly evaluating all options, including a fallback to a $7.9 million qualifying offer if no deal is reached.

Sacramento and Phoenix Express Interest in Trade Talks

Several teams have expressed interest in Kuminga, with the Sacramento Kings and Phoenix Suns leading potential sign-and-trade scenarios. ESPN's Mark Spears reported that Kuminga favours a move to Sacramento, where he believes he would receive more consistent minutes and a larger offensive role.

'He wants to go. And the Kings are offering a starting spot, power forward next to Keegan Murray, next to Sabonis', said the Spears.

However, the Warriors have thus far rejected trade packages that include bench players and draft picks, holding firm on their valuation. No deal has been finalised, and Kuminga remains under Golden State's control as a restricted free agent.
