April 05--Infielder Jonathan Herrera earned the final spot on the Chicago Cubs' 25-man roster.
Herrera, a switch-hitting infielder who was a non-roster invitee, earned the spot over outfielder Ryan Sweeney, who was designated for assignment. The Cubs have 10 days to trade, waive or release Sweeney, who will earn $1.5 million this season.
Matt Szczur, who performed well this spring, also earned a spot on the opening day roster, as expected.
The Cubs placed pitchers Dallas Beeler, Jacob Turner and Tsuyoshi Wada and outfielder Chris Denorfia on the 15-day disabled list. All players were placed on the DL, retroactive to March 27.
