Jonathan Davies calls out 'staggering' lack of skills in Scarlets v Zebre

Welsh rugby legend Jonathan Davies has criticised the "staggering" lack of skills in Scarlets' 18-17 win over Zebre on Sunday.

The Welsh region squeezed through for a late victory after being given a mighty scare by their Italian visitors in an error-strewn encounter.

It took a penalty from outside-half Angus O’Brien three minutes from time to secure the win and spare the hosts’ blushes.

Despite the result, there was no disguising that it was a pretty unconvincing display from Glenn Delaney’s team, one which became increasingly blighted by mistakes and penalty offences.

Jiffy tweeted: "Watching Scarlets v Zebre. Sorry to say but the lack of skills is staggering".

He wasn't alone in his views with fans lamenting the standard of the rugby on show, not for the first time this season.

With defeats to Munster, Glasgow and Edinburgh, plus narrow victories over the two Italian sides, it's been a something of a stuttering start to the new PRO14 season for the Scarlets.

The weekend before last saw all four regional teams, and the Wales men's national team, lose their matches in what has been a generally disappointing period for Welsh rugby.

Davies recently expressed concerns over the lack of game-breakers Welsh rugby is developing, telling WalesOnline:

“I’m not looking to slag anyone off. It’s easy to jump on the bandwagon," Davies said.

“Pivac is a good coach. He’s done well with the Scarlets.

“It’s the lack of options coming through, that’s the worry I’ve got.

“When you get to international rugby, defences are so structured, so organised and so hard to break down.

“It’s very difficult to see where Wales are going to break them down at the minute.

“We don’t have players to break that first line of defence."
