Jonathan David backed to use Celtic to kickstart career as Lille's Alfredo Morelos alternative continues to struggle

Lille boss Christophe Galtier has urged Jonathan David to kickstart his career with a goal against Celtic.

The Canadian joined the French club in the summer for £27million as an alternative to Rangers star Alfredo Morelos, but he's struggled so far.

The Hoops travel to France for Thursday's Europa League clash against the Ligue 1 side in the second round of the group stage games.

Celtic are low in confidence after two defeats from Rangers and AC Milan, followed by a 3-3 draw at Pittodrie against Aberdeen on Sunday.

They will face Canadian hitman David, who Lille splashed out their record fee in August to land the striker from Gent. However, he's yet to score in nine appearances for Lille and was even dropped for their weekend draw with Nice.

But manager Galtier insists it's too early to judge their star man.

He said: "We are very calm about his situation. Of course, strikers get judged on goals, but that puts him in a difficult position.

"We advise him, talk to him, encourage him and we tell him the goals will come.

"We're telling him what to do on the pitch and he will do that.

"It takes time to build an understanding with his team mates. He understands that we did not sign him for two months, we signed him on a five-year contract.

"We had Nicolas Pepe at Lille and it took him quite some time to start scoring regularly and then, of course, he couldn't stop scoring.

"You have to be everything into perspective, he is progressing and works very hard in training. Perhaps we will have to try something different with him. But the goals will come for him."

And Galtier explained why he dropped David for the weekend clash.

He said: "I have to manage everyone's playing time because we have a lot of games just now.

"We are very much looking forward to playing Celtic on Thursday."
