Jonathan Carr: The loving son stabbed to death by his supposed best friend

Popular Jonathan, described as having a “heart of gold”, died at the hands of a man he considered to be like a brother, who stuck a knife in his chest.

The-21-year-old was found dead at his flat in Deckham, Gateshead, after spending the night socialising with pal Daniel Smith, in July 2018.

His body was discovered the following day when Smith went to a police station with his mum saying he thought he might have stabbed his friend.

Smith, 21, of Cotemede, Wardley, Gateshead, admitted killing Jonathan but denied murder throughout his trial at Newcastle Crown Court, claiming he had been acting in self defence.

However, the jury rejected his version of events and convicted Smith of murder.

Jailing him for life with a minimum of 16 years, the Judge Mr Justice Goss, said: "I’m quite satisfied from all of the evidence you were the aggressor from the outset.”

Jonathan's mum, Gail Sloan, paid tribute to her son in a statement read to the court.

She said: "Jonathan was such a lovely happy person and made time for everyone but kept himself to himself and never looked for trouble.

"He had a heart of gold and was generous, helping his friends in any way he could.”
