Jonathan Allen says ‘pieces don’t win games’

Jonathan Allen wouldn’t disagree the Washington Redskins have some pieces.

But he would disagree that it means much.

Allen offered up a sobering reality during OTAs recently, pointing out that the past few seasons the Redskins have looked good on paper before failing to produce on the field.

“I’ve felt that way the last three years, but we haven’t done it,” Allen said, via Peter Hailey of NBCSportsWashington.com. “You can have all the pieces you want, but if you’re not consistent and everybody doesn’t do their job, it doesn’t matter. We have a bunch of pieces, but pieces don’t win games.”

A serious case of the injury bug hasn’t helped the Redskins lately. But the outlook isn’t wrong regardless: Washington has been the subject of offseason optimism plenty lately, only for things to fall apart.

This doesn’t change the fact Allen’s defense figures to be good again next year in large part because of his group in the trenches. Some newish faces will have to help at linebacker and edge rusher though, so Allen is right to caution a measured approach to the offseason.
