Jonathan Afolabi signs Celtic deal as teenage striker pens two-year contract

Jonathan Afolabi has signed a two-year deal with Celtic .

The 19-year-old striker has made the move to Parkhead after leaving Southampton in the summer.

Afolabi is highly-rated in youth circles in Ireland where he was a key part of the Irish side that reached the semi-finals of this summer's European Championships.

The free agent teen was given the VIP treatment by the Hoops as they tackled Dunfermline in the Betfred Cup this afternoon and the deal was confirmed shortly afterwards.

Afolabi becomes Neil Lennon's sixth summer signing after the arrivals of Christopher Jullien , Boli Bolingoli, Luca Connell, Hatem Abd Elhamed and Liam Burt this summer.

And Lennon said: "He's here. He’s a young lad from Southampton, we’ve signed him on a free transfer and he’s one for development.

“He’s on the cusp, so he’ll come in and train with us and we’ll get a good look at him in the next couple of weeks.

“Then we’ll decide what we want to do with him in terms of where his progression is.

“He had a great tournament in the Euros. He’s raw, but we feel he has good potential.”

The Tallaght-born frontman reportedly turned down offers from Spain and Russian clubs this summer.

Crystal Palace were also linked while Aston Villa had shown an interest earlier in the summer.

He is likely to join the club's academy side where former Rangers midfielder Burt is looking to impress after his summer switch across Glasgow.

Lennon is now set to further strengthen his squad in the final two weeks of the transfer window.

Full-backs are the priority although another flair player in the forward positions could also be on his wishlist.
