Jonathan Afolabi pictured at Celtic Park as transfer target closes in on switch to Hoops

Former Southampton striker Jonathan Afolabi is at Celtic Park this afternoon as he closes in on a move to the Scottish champions.

The Republic of Ireland youth international, 19, is being given the VIP treatment by the Hoops as they tackle Dunfermline in the Betfred Cup.

Afolabi is a free agent after leaving Saints at the end of the season and could become the latest teenager to swap developing his game with EPL sides for the Premiership .

Forward Armstrong Oko-Flex moved to Celtic from Arsenal a year ago and goalkeeper Tobi Oluwayemi arrived from Tottenham just last month.

Now a deal for Afolabi is close and the player could be confirmed by Celtic after turning down offers from Spain and Russian clubs.

Crystal Palace were also linked with the teen - who hails from Tallaght - while Aston Villa had shown an interest earlier in the summer.

But it's Celic who look to have won the race and Afolabi would become the sixth summer signing for Neil Lennon following Christopher Jullien , Boli Bolingoli, Luca Connell, Hatem Abd Elhamed and Liam Burt this summer.

He is likely to join the club's academy side where former Rangers midfielder Burt is looking to impress after his summer switch across Glasgow.

Lennon admits he and the Celtic board will leave no stone unturned in the search for new talent.

He said:  "We are working diligently in the background to bring players in and increase the quality and competition and strength in depth of the squad.

"The board have been absolutely top class with me."
