Jonas Lossl explains how his situation at Everton was 'untenable' after sealing transfer exit

Jonas Lossl has admitted that his situation at Everton had become “untenable” after completing a transfer deadline day exit from Goodison Park.

The Denmark international returned home on Monday to rejoin Midtjylland, the club for whom he made 137 appearances at the start of his career before going to French side Guingamp in 2014.

Signed by Everton on a Bosman-style free transfer after his contract with relegated Huddersfield Town expired in 2019, Lossl failed to make a single first team appearance during his 18-month stint with the Blues.

With Maarten Stekelenburg ahead of him on the bench last season, Lossl was allowed to return to the Terriers on loan for the second half of the campaign, playing 15 matches for them in the Championship.

Despite the veteran Dutchman’s return to Ajax last summer, Lossl continued to be third choice under Carlo Ancelotti after Sweden international Robin Olsen was brought in on loan from Roma to provide greater competition to Jordan Pickford.

HITC quote Lossl as telling TV2: “I know I have to go after playing time. It is necessary to get to the European Championships, which means an insane amount to me.

“I was in a situation at Everton that was untenable. That was not what I wanted.

“I should have some playing time. Midtjylland wanting me was just fantastic.”

However, former Denmark striker Mads Junker believes that Lossl – capped once by his country and understudy to Leicester City’s Kasper Schmeichel with the national team – might find himself stuck on the bench at his new club where Jesper Hansen has been number one.

He said: "I don’t think Jonas Lossl has been brought in as first goalkeeper.

“It would be very surprising. I still see Hansen as the best.

“From Lossl’s point of view, I wonder can you not find a Championship club where you can play a lot? Or a Norwegian, German or Swedish club?”
