Jonas Eidevall urges Alessia Russo to have greater influence for Arsenal

Jonas Eidevall says Alessia Russo is having “too little involvement” in Arsenal's attacking play, and has urged her to get into the box more.

Russo has registered six goals and two assists in 13 appearances in all competitions since joining Arsenal as a free agent at the end of her Manchester United contract in the summer.

But Eidevall believes she and her team-mates can combine better as her first season with the Gunners progresses.

“Relationship-building in football takes time," said Eidevall. “It takes time to learn to play together. There are qualities that Alessia has already shown on the pitch and there are qualities she will be able to show the more we work together.

“We need her in the golden area in the penalty area. [She’s having] too little involvement for my liking. There is a very clear relationship. If we can find her more often in those positions, that’s going to result in more goals or assists.”

Arsenal are behind Women's Super League leaders Chelsea only on goal difference, and face rivals Spurs at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday.

Eidevall said: “Kim [Little] is the question mark from the Chelsea game. We will need to assess that and we will see tomorrow."

Beth Mead returned to action for Arsenal, following a near-year-long absence following an ACL injury.

Asked about her strong form since her return, Eidevall said: “There is no human who can step into the same river twice. You will never be the same player. But these things will all be managed.

“It’s been really good to see the level that she’s reached lately. But it’s from the accumulation of a lot of hard work that she’s been doing.”

Eidevall also revealed Arsenal are likely to be busy in the transfer market, despite currently being full in terms of player registrations.

“I’m not going to comment on any individuals," he said. "I can see us both having players in and out in January.”
