New drama series The Drowning hits screens today (1 February), and tells the story of a grieving mother who is convinced that her son is actually alive.

Starring Jill Halfpenny and Rupert Penry-Jones, the four-part series will air over the course of four consecutive days on Channel 5.

Halfpenny plays Jodie, the mother whose son has been presumed dead for nine years, while Penry-Jones plays the father of Daniel, the teenage boy whom Jodie is convinced is somehow her own living progeny.

Also featured in the supporting cast is Jonas Armstrong, who plays Jodie’s dependable brother, Jason.

Armstrong is an Irish-born actor best known for his role in the BBC adaptation of Robin Hood, which ran from 2006 to 2009.

Appearing in the lead role, as Robin Hood himself, Armstrong left the show after three series, which was followed by its cancellation.

Before starring in Robin Hood, Armstrong appeared as a regular in the Channel 4 series Teachers (playing Anthony Millington), the Channel 4 crime drama Ghost Squad, and the ITV miniseries Losing Gemma.

In the years after, Armstrong could be seen in a small role opposite Tom Cruise in the time loop sci-fi thriller Edge of Tomorrow, and as a regular in Ripper Street.

He also showed up in three episodes of the hit BBC One police drama Line of Duty, and appeared as the sinister Sean Meredith on the hit ITV crime series The Bay.

The Drowning begins Monday 1 February at 9pm on Channel 5.
