Jonah Williams would be 8th first-round pick to miss entire rookie year over last decade

If Cincinnati Bengals left tackle Jonah Williams misses the entirety of his rookie season, as the team expects, he’ll be one of just eight players to have done so over the last 10 years.

James Palmer of NFL Network provided the list above, with the most recent additions being Isaiah Wynn of the New England Patriots last year and the Bengals with William Jackson in 2016.

The Bengals announced Tuesday that Williams will likely miss his rookie season after surgery to repair a torn labrum.

For Williams, that isn’t an ideal list to be on. Jackson has turned out well so far, but the same can’t be said for the rest of the list besides Wynn, who still has plenty of time to prove the setback won’t hurt his career.

Outside of Wynn and Jackson, all of those players mightily suffered from missing a rookie year and at best became role players. That’s certainly not what the Bengals envisioned with Williams, who arrived and immediately got tasked with starting at left tackle in a new head coach’s offensive scheme.

That plan now goes on the shelf with Williams, who is in rare company if he indeed misses the entire season.
